There are many things –about life, about God, about Christianity- that are hard or even impossible to completely understand, at least on this side of heaven. The Trinity. Eternity. Justification. Sanctification. Predestination. Grace. They are great mysteries. It is a good thing to strive to comprehend these mysteries. By God’s grace, we are able to understand some, but it is also exceedingly important to be filled with awe at God, whose wisdom is so far above our own.
“‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways My ways,’
declares the LORD.
‘As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are My ways higher than your ways
and My thoughts than your thoughts.’”
-Isaiah 55:8-9
Here’s a nice mathematical inequality for you: (YHWH Elohim) > (Dave White)
For those of you who aren’t very math-savvy, this means: God (Yahweh Elohim) is greater than me (Dave White). Far too often, I find myself trying to explain God or put Him in some sort of box that I can understand and handle. Lots of the time, in my heart, this is not a simple desire to know God, rather it is pride: a sinful, selfish desire to be God myself. I want Him to be under me. Perhaps you have this attitude as well and need to repent along with me.
My point in this is very simple. God’s nature and character is far greater than anything the collective wisdom of humanity can ever even come close to expressing. Bow down before Him. Worship Him for Who He is, even if you do not understand Him. He is the holy, mighty, infinite, and good God.
Please, I encourage you, I urge you. Spend time with God in prayer. Acknowledge Who He is and that He is far above you. Though this sounds something akin to demeaning (towards you), it is the best thing you can do. As we worship Him, as we spend time in the overwhelming brilliance of His presence, this transforms our lives.
Continuing to be transformed and enjoying the process,
Dave White
“I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you… that [your] hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.” – Colossians 2:1-4
